Maria Kapajeva is an artist from Estonia who works and lives in London. Her multicultural background drives her practice to mine a diverse spectrum of cultural identity and gender issues within historical and contemporary contexts. She works with stories and histories that grow out of her collection of vernacular photography that she finds in archives, old family albums, on the internet or in flea markets. Kapajeva deals with political and social issues of the past and question how they resonate in people's contemporary lives. She looks for stories that have been forgotten and are about to disappear. Using photography as a starting point, Maria works with video, installation and object based art. She embeds found objects and images into unique pieces using various printing and stitching techniques.

Maria Kapajeva's work has been shown internationally including the most recent two solo exhibitions in Estonia and Poland, the group exhibitions in Belgium, USA, Croatia, Colombia, Lithuania, France and India and the screenings at Deptford Cinema (London 2018), NexT Film Festival (Romania 2017) and Berlin Feminist Film Week (Germany 2017) and many others. Kapajeva was awarded Gasworks & Triangle Network Fellowship to go to Kooshk Art Residency in Iran. She was invited to develop her work in various residencies such as Kaunas Photography Gallery Residency (Lithuania/2017), Narva Art Residency (Estonia/2016 & 2017), FATHOM Residency at Four Corners Film (UK/2015), Bridge Guard Residency (Slovakia/1014). Recently she has got an Runner-up Award at FOKUS Video Art Festival (Denmark) for her video work 'Test Shooting'.

Maria's first dummy 'You can call him another man' was shortlisted for UNSEEN Dummy Award (Netherlands/2016) and selected for TOP 10 for Dummy Award at Riga Self-Publish (Latvia/2016). The book will be published in 2018 in collaboration with Kaunas Photography Gallery and with support of Estonian Cultural Endowment. www.mariakapajeva.com. Instagram/ Twitter @mkapajeva
